CBIEP

One major project LEDCO has completed is the Community Based Integrated Energy Planning project (CBIEP). To effectively address the energy needs of the local community, LEDCO initiated the CBIEP project in close collaboration with the Canadian Cooperation Office (CCO) and the Water and Energy Commission Secretariat's Institutional Development Project (WIDP). An Advisory Committee, compromising of all major players in the rural energy sector of Nepal, was also created to obtain input and to stimulate interaction between members of the energy planning community.

The concept consists of integrating the six major components that contribute to sustainable energy development into the energy planning process.

After developing the first methodology for community based energy resource development planning in Nepal, LEDCO assisted local communities in using it to develop a five year energy plan. The study has achieved the following results:

1. An Integrated Energy Development Plan encompassing the:

   • design of energy schemes
   • implementation strategy for the development of energy resources of the two VDCs
   • creation of Energy Management Committees
   • assessment of available natural resources
   • increased awareness of energy technologies among the local communities.
2. The first replicable community-based energy planning methodology in Nepal.
3. Development of a network for rural energy planning.
4. Organisational strengthening and confidence building within the local community.
5. Capacity building of local NGOs and governing bodies.
